During DEMAPP project SSAB Europe (Ruukki Metals) has developed Ramor® cut-to-length stripand heavy plateproducts for ballistic protection and blast resistance applications. SSAB Europe patented directquenching technology has been the key element in research and development of new products. In the project SSAB Europe has been able to push the limits of steels processing technology into a whole new level. Quenched and hardened strip steels with tensile strength even up to 1900 MPa can be produced at Raahe Steelworks.
Metallurgical studies and usability tests have been made in cooperation with Finnish Universities, Research Centers and SSAB Europe. The researchers at Center of Advanced Steels Research at University of Oulu (CASR) have studied the microstructure and thermo mechanical hot rolling using Gleeble thermomechanical simulator in order to develop better steels. In Tampere Wear Center at Tampere University of Technology (TWC) researchers have studied the steels usability with different kinds of laboratory equipment such as Hopkinson Split Bar (HSB). HSB enables high quality research work using deformation with ultra-high strain rates.
The new Ramor 550 steel can be used in civilian and military protection applications such as protected vehicles. With Ramor 550 steel the customer can reduce the needed thickness for ballistic protection, thus decreasing the weight of the protected vehicle.
Ramor 550 protection steel is for customers who seek extreme protection and safety performance for their end-products. Ramor steel plate has excellent ballistic properties in combination with high hardness and strength. Ramor is developed for applications where blast protection or high ballistic resistance is required like cars, security vans and military vehicles.
