The need for developing lighter components for jaw crushers lead to utilization of new constructions materials in Metso crushers. The polymer and hybrid materials applicability for components susceptible for heavy loading and sharp impacts was studied first in laboratory and later in field testing in customer’s equipment.
The use of polymer and hybrid materials decreases the weight of Metso crusher components. In total 60 % weight saving was achieved in belt guards and flywheel covers. Decreased weight among other improvements lead to fuel savings and better ecology. Weight decreasing also improved the usability of the crusher components. The lighter machinery is more easily moved around and lighter components are easier to open for maintenance.
In addition to weight savings, the use of polymer and hybrid materials also improved the durability of the crusher.
- Extremely impact resistant, do not crack or deform easily
- Recover quickly in case bigger rocks hit the guards and it temporarily gives up due to an impact
- Made out of one piece, no need for rivets, bolts and nuts that could get loose due to vibration
- No weld seams on the guards that would be sensitive for fatigue
The new material solutions also increased the freedom of design. The design of new Metso Lokotrack sets it apart from the competitors not just by its looks, but also by the usability, serviceability and safer working environment it offers. The new freedom of design has led to three iF design awards and Fennia prize award in 2014.
The Metso Lokotrack crusher is designed for crushing of hard rock and recycled materials for various purposes such as infrastructure construction. The light structure is an important character of the crusher as it affects the usability and energy efficiency of the crusher. The lighter the machine is, the easier it is to move. The need for lighter structures leads to utilization of new constructions materials in Metso crushers.
The use of polymer and hybrid materials in selected components improved usability, durability and energy efficiency of the crusher. The new material solutions also gave new freedom of design. The improved characteristics of the crusher set it apart from the competitors in terms of usability, serviceability, energy efficiency and safer working environment.
